In the sixties of the twentieth century the term MPB (Música Popular Brasileira or Popular Brazilian Music) was used to indicate the musical movement that followed the bossa nova. It was more or less an intellectual left-wing student movement that criticized the dictatorial oppression and social injustice. Gradually this movement disappeared but the term MPB survived and was used for a much wider genre than bossa nova. Now MPB can best be defined as Brazilian popular music after 1965 and can include various musical genres like bossa nova, funk, pop, and rock. If you walk into a record shop in Brazil, you'll definitely find record shelves marked "MPB".
