The repinique (also called repique) is a membranophonic instrument. It is a medium high pitched drum with membranes on each side. The repinique produces a high volume. In the samba batucada it plays a leading role. Besides playing the groove of the batucada the repinique is also used to start and stop the bateria of the samba school by playing the start and stop cues, and indicating breaks. Furthermore the instrument is used for playing solos. In samba batucada the repinique is played with one wooden stick and one hand. In samba reggae two plastic sticks are used.
