Caixa

Caixa

The word "caixa" means "box" in Portuguese. In musical terms the caixa is a Brazilian snare drum which may have originally been a Portuguese military snare drum and is made of a light weight metal. It has two synthetic membranes on each side, one of them with metal snares. It is used in the "bateria" of the "escola de samba" for playing "samba enredo". It can be played "high", pressed against the shoulder and it can be played "low", on the nivel of the hips, slung over the shoulder with a strap. The caixa is played with a pair of drumsticks.
